Winter Cameo
After the cold and wet day yesterday we really felt winter moving in so we wrote some winter poems.
Here are a couple from our class.
Community Walks
As part of our community study we have been going on walks to look around our local community, look at local shops, sports areas and our community streets. We noticed a lot of rubbish around our school area so went on weekly walks picking up rubbish in an effort to make our community look better.
Walking through the tunnel under the new bypass to Walker Cres
Outside the Jack St Dairy
Jayda and others with their rubbish bags
Waiting patiently at the railway crossing
Just about back to school
One walk worth of rubbish. All this picked up in an hour around our local streets!!
Swim for life
We have been very fortunate to have the swim for life instructors in again this term for swim lessons. As part of this programme our children have learned about water safety, life saving and water survival skills. The children have loved participating in these swim sessions and look forward to visits again in term 4.
Community visit to Kensington Park
The Junior Syndicate walked to Kensington Park to visit some of our community support groups. These included the Northland Electricity Rescue Helicopter, St Johns Ambulance, Fire Service and the Police. We were able to look and hear about how these essential services assist the community and also identify ways to keep ourselves safe when out and about. Here are some photos from the day and also some video footage of the Fire Service in action.

Olympic Poses
Today we made Olympic Wreaths for craft. Here is Room 5 wearing their wreaths showing their wonderful Olympic poses.
Medalist Visit
We have loved watching the Olympics and seeing our New Zealand competitors doing so well. We have learned about the Olympic mascots, Mandeville and Wenlock and we have watched some of the olympic sports on our Activ-Boards. The whole school went to the library to watch the 100 metre final. We were very lucky to have Ann Muir, our very own Lawn Bowls bronze medalist from the Commonwealth games, come in to show us her medals and talk about what happens at the games. We have also watched some of our local players playing for New Zealand at the Olympics in hockey, soccer, sailing and the triathlon.
All of the school watching the 100 metros final.

Visit by Fire Service
This week we started our "Get Firewise' program me and had some of the local fire brigade come in to talk to us and learn about fire safety. We talked about what we need to do in a fire, what causes fire, and how to keep safe. Here are some of the things we had to say about the visit.
"Don't play with matches 'the fireman said. We pretended that our classroom caught on fire and we had to crawl out.
Unique
Yesterday I learned about fires and matches and lighters and we read a story.
Verne
When I smell smoke I stay low, crawl under smoke to the door. Call out "Fire! Fire! Fire!"
Lennox
I went to the fire engine and it had a big ladder on top of it.
Rosa
The fire engine warns us with it's siren.
Bradley
We had to go outside and pretend there was a fire.
Nigel
We pretended that there was a fire at school yesterday.
Jamie
My Mum and my brother and me are home and it is on fire. We have to meet at the letter box if the house catches on fire.
O'Riely
The firemen visited us and we crawled under the smoke and we went out of the class and we came back in to sit down . It was fun because we crawled under the smoke.
Chrisma
I stayed low and crawled under the smoke to the door and shouted, "Fire!Fire!Fire!"
Myra Mei
I liked crawling under the black thing because it was dark. When we started we were asleep, then the smoke alarm ringed. We waked up and started yelling "Fire! Fire! Fire!' Then we started to crawl under the black thing. We had to go outside or else we would die.

Keeping Ourselves Safe
This week we have started working on Keeping Ourselves Safe. This involves visits from Constable Jasmine and also work in class regarding our homes, staying safe and our bodies. Today we looked at expressing our feelings and how we might react in different situations. Have a look at our facial expressions and see if you can choose between the following feelings - sad, happy, angry, proud, scared or confused.
